For five terms, the 71st and 72nd Assembly District has not had good representation in Washington D.C.. The duties of Congress are listed below to guide us, while we look for a candidate to endorse.

  • Legislation: Introducing, debating, and voting on bills to create federal laws, which must pass both the House and Senate to become law.

  • Representation: Serving as the voice for their constituents, advocating for their district's interests in Washington, D.C..

  • Constituent Services (Casework): Helping citizens resolve issues with federal agencies like the IRS, Social Security, or the State Department.

  • Oversight: Monitoring and investigating the Executive Branch and federal programs.

  • Budget & Finance: Passing the federal budget, levying taxes, and borrowing money.

  • National Security: Declaring war, maintaining the military, and approving treaties (Senate only).

  • Committees: Members serve on specialized committees (e.g., finance, agriculture, defense) to focus on specific policy areas,

  • In Washington: Attending sessions, meeting with advocates, working in committees, and with their staff.

  • In their District/State: Meeting with local officials, business leaders, and residents to understand their concerns.

  • House: Represents specific districts, elected every two years; initiates revenue bills and impeachment proceedings.

  • Senate: Represents entire states, elected for six-year terms; provides "advice and consent" on presidential nominations and treaties.
